Solar
power, Environmental issues, and Carbon footprints
We only have one planet and it is up to us to ensure that it is a healthy place to live for future generations. We are currently facing a host of environmental issues which should concern every person living on Earth. In order to combat issues such as climate change, dwindling resources, and poor air and water quality we will need to find new ways to reduce our carbon footprints and reliance on fossil fuels. Alternative sources of energy like wind and solar power will inevitably become more and more important.
At SLCenvironmental.com, we believe that it is the responsibility of every man, woman and child to do what they can to help preserve a healthy environment for our posterity. The effects of our unquestioning reliance on fossil fuels are becoming more and more evident with each passing year. We have therefore created this website to be used as a source of information for anyone that wants to do their part for the environment. We do not endorse any particular company or product, and the website is strictly for informational purposes only.
Many of the environmental issues we face today have been caused by our primary energy source, fossil fuels. The burning of oil and coal has been proven to release a variety of gases and chemicals into the atmosphere which are being blamed for creating the “greenhouse effect”. These gases trap the radiated heat from the planet that would otherwise diffuse into space and results in a steadily growing warming of the earth as a whole. And while it may be true that periods of warming and cooling have occurred in the past, there can be no doubt that human activities are greatly affecting the intensity and speed at which it is currently happening.
Renewable energy sources such as solar power are one way in which we can help reduce our collective carbon footprints. “Renewable energy” refers to those power sources that are not only infinitely abundant, but also have no adverse effects on the surrounding ecology. Unlike oil and coal, which are not only harmful to the planet but are also finite in their availability, energy from the sun is free, relatively easy to harness, and is available in a never ending supply. Furthermore, the harnessing and use of solar power does not produce environmentally detrimental side effects.
Of course, solar is not the only renewable energy resource we have at our disposal. Wind power is quickly gaining ground as an easy to harness source of inexpensive electricity. Small wind turbines can be used to generate enough power to, at the very least, help reduce your reliance on fossil fuel-based energy. However, it is not unheard of for a properly designed and installed wind turbine to be able to provide enough electricity to completely eliminate the need for a connection to the community grid. Furthermore, large-scale wind farms are popping up all over the world and are proving to be an effective means of powering entire communities.
